‘Stage Mother’ and ‘Tesla’ at Cinema Art Theater
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will screen “Stage Mother” starting Friday, Aug. 21. This poignant comedy-drama tells the story of parents who reject their gay son, and the lengths the mother goes to after he dies to understand him better.
When conservative, Texas church choir director Maybelline, played by Jacki Weaver, inherits her recently deceased son's drag club, she surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open up and find new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother figure to the club's flamboyant performers...until a surprise visit threatens to upend her new life. The wonderful cast includes Lucy Liu, Adrian Grenier and Mya Taylor.
Screening times are 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21 and 22; and 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 23. Screenings continue through Thursday, Aug. 27.
The Cinema Art Theater will present “Tesla” starting Saturday, Aug. 22. This biographical drama explores the life of a visionary inventor who grappled with a mix of a brilliant brain and a tortured soul.
Nikola Tesla, played by Ethan Hawke, fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition. Increasingly displeased by the greed of fellow inventor Thomas Edison, played by Kyle MacLachlan, Tesla forges his own virtuous but arduous path toward creating the innovative alternating-current motor. His European nature is at odds with budding American industrialism, the landscape of intellectual property is treacherous, and Tesla slowly becomes jailed inside his overactive mind. His associate Anne Morgan, played by Eve Hewson, analyzes and presents his story as it unfolds, offering a distinctly modern voice in this scientific period drama.
Screening times are 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22; 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 23; and 3 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Admission is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
