Box turtles on the move. Four sighted in three days. First on Saturday on Fourth Street in Lewes by the woods. Nice lady with two dogs. Grandson on the back of the bicycle. She's looking down.
"Look at this little critter."
Had to circle back. Head out, facing the street near the sidewalk, a box turtle, yellow markings on brown. Put me in mind of Navajo rugs.
"Maybe I should carry him across the street. Don't want to see him get smooshed."
"But," I said. "What if he's come this far and has decided he doesn't want to go any further and you take him across and he decides to come back and then gets smooshed. Best, I think, to let him make up his own mind and take his chances."
On Sunday someone said they saw two box turtles along the bike trail and on Monday Becky Bowden said she saw one alongside the road. "I looked at him, turned around to do something, looked back and he was gone. I didn't know they could move that fast."
Tuesday night's the full moon. Cliff said the horseshoe crabs will be on the move. Mating season. Heading to the edge of the beach to lay millions of eggs to keep a 200 million-year, at least, cycle going.
Lots of things affected by the full moon. Some not so good. Werewolves howling at the moon. Lunatics. Some good things. Bella Luna. "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's amoré."
So maybe box turtles, horseshoe crabs and pizza pie people are all on the move for the same reason.
That's amoré.
