DelDOT please take note. There's a dangerous signal conflict at the corner of Kings Highway and Gills Neck Road outside the City of Lewes. It needs immediate attention before someone gets hurt. Here's what happens:
Cyclists and walkers coming up the trail along Gills Neck Road toward the high school stop at the crosswalk and push the signal activator. In a minute or two, the walking signal comes on and walkers and cyclists figure they're safe to cross for a minute or so without having to worry about other traffic. That's usually the way it's supposed to work. But not in this case.
What happens at this crosswalk is that the walking man picture comes up but the traffic sitting on Gills Neck Road waiting to turn onto Kings Highway also gets a green light putting them immediately into conflict with the walkers.
Cyclists and drivers start looking at each other like "Wassup?!?"
It needs a reset, now.
I've often told my five-year-old granddaughter Maisy Peach that she has to wait to cross the street until she sees Mr. Walker, and then look both ways and she should be safe.
Unfortunately, at this intersection, for now, she could be in trouble.
Thanks in advance to those who address this safety issue.
