Traverse City Adventure: Beer at a Toledo brewery

Here’s downtown Toledo along the Maumee River.

They’ve been brewing Buckeye beer, in the building that now houses the Maumee Brewery, for more than a century. They call it a “sparkling dry beer” and it’s very refreshing.
Here’s a bottle of Buckeye and a pint of Maumee Brewery’s High Level Lager. Both are light in ABV (alcohol by volume) and low in IBUs (international bitter units) which makes them easy drinking and not too sharp in the mouth. Our barmaid reached for the bottle and then hesitated: “Do you want to finish that? There’s still a suckle in it.” “A suckle?” I asked. “Yes, that’s what I like to call that. It’s like I’d rather call someone who drinks too much a drunkard instead of a drunk.” “Hmmm,” I said. “What’s your name?” “Harley?” “Like Harley Davidson?” “Or harlequin.” Clearly that was another word she liked. PS - See the Buckeye motto on the label? “When you’re dry - drink a Buckeye.” Chris told me that would be his new motto. I told him he could do worse. Trish said: “Doubtful.”

At the Elmore Cyclery in Elmore, Ohio, they have a bicycle hanging from the ceiling. It was built - wooden rims and all - in nearby Clyde in 1895. Bicycles quickly gave way to cars and the automotive industry is still king in this part of Ohio and nearby Michigan. In an Elmore museum they have a car built under the brandname of Elmore.
The North Coastal Inland Trail passed this neat and multi-faceted organic farm. In the foreground are rows of organic greens getting ready to love the cooler weather. That contraption silhouetted against the white building on the right is a working oil well. They get a lot out of their ground in Ohio.

And this is the very western end of the North Coastal Inland Trail outside of Elmore. There are plans to extend the trail to Toledo.

DAY 20 - 31 AUGUST 2017 • FREMONT

After a good breakfast at the AM Corner Cafe in downtown Fremont, Ohio, we wound our way back to the North Coastal Inland Trail and continued westward. Rain threatened most of the day so we put our bag covers on, and then that chilly north wind reared its ugly head so we put on rain coats as windbreakers and for another layer of warmth.  

We finished off the North Coastal Inland Trail west of Elmore, a town with a bicycle manufacturing tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. In all, we rode just shy of 70 miles on the trail and it was a great experience with some of the best riding surface we’ve ever been on.  In some areas, it was paved smooth with a composite concrete surface and the trail folks had painted yellow dashes down the center to keep people on the right side of the trail. Signage was excellent, the trail went through many nice small towns.  Couldn’t ask for much more.

By the time we reached Sylvania, west of Toledo and after lunch at the Maumee Brewery not far from the river by the same name, we had logged about 44 miles.  That brings our total on this trip to 704 miles.  Tomorrow we’re headed toward Kalamazoo and along the way plan to stop at the Hidden Lakes Gardens - a botanical garden and arboretum operated by Michigan State University
