The Rehoboth Beach Film Society, the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, and the Lewes Public Library invite film and/or literary enthusiasts to a screening of "The Swimmer" at 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, at Cinema Art Theater. Based on the 1964 short story of the same name by American writer John Cheever, "The Swimmer" is an epic drama starring Burt Lancaster, Janice Rule and Janet Landgard.
One day while at a pool party with friends, upper-class suburbanite Ned Merrill realizes there is a series of swimming pools that form a “river” to his house. He decides to journey the eight miles home by swimming across every pool in town. As the cocky Ned swims through each location, insights into his character and personal relationships are revealed by the outdoor guests he meets. A final encounter with an old flame leaves him shaken and devastated. This screening is part of the Read a Movie series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather for discussion.
The film society continues its new series of popular independent films. Screening this weekend at Cinema Art Theater is "Anomalisa," an adult animated feature film. It will be shown at 4 and 7 p.m. Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, and at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 8. The Cinema Art Theater is located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
Nominated for Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2015, "Anomalisa" is made entirely with stop-motion animation. This drama is about Michael Stone (played by David Thewlis), a hopeless man whose outlook on life is turned upside down when he meets an extraordinary stranger (Jennifer Jason Leigh).
Stone is a disenchanted, motivational speaker who writes and lectures on customer service. His view on life, and the mundane and boring people in it, is reflected in director Charlie Kaufman’s technique of using only one voice (Tom Noonan) for all the other characters in the story. Can this view of life be changed by encounters with two different women? One encounter is an attempt to reinvent a former relationship, the other is with a fan in a chance meeting at the hotel where he is appearing.
Admission to "The Swimmer" is $3 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $5 for nonmembers. Tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. The evening of the screening, attendees can receive 15 percent off Crooked Hammock regular-priced dinner entrees.
