A four-masted schooner undergoing repairs in Wilmington

January 3, 2017

Whether it was on the banks of the Broadkill, Lewes Creek, Mispillion River or Christina River, shipbuilding has long been an important part of the industry and economy of Delaware. At the Jackson and Sharp shipyard in Wilmington, ships ranging from submarine chasers, to sailing schooners, freighters and luxury yachts found a skilled and enterprising workforce ready to put their talents to work for the maritime trade.

This photograph from 1920 shows the four-masted schooner known as Charles D. Stanford, from Bangor, Maine, up on the hard - as they say - for repairs.
