Worcester Prep students win DAR essay contest

March 7, 2017

The Gen. Levin Winder Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a reception at Worcester Prep Feb. 15 to present three students awards for the DAR American History Essay Contest. A panel of judges composed of DAR members and nonmembers selected as chapter winners: seventh-grader Pranay Sanwal of Lewes, eighth-grader Claire Williams of Berlin, Md., and ninth-grader Quinn McColgan of Millsboro.

The 2016-17 DAR essay prompt was: The National Park Service was established by Congress in 1916. The National Park Service manages approximately 84.4 million acres of national parks. Pretend you are writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 national parks. Identify its location. Discuss why and when it was established as a national park. What makes this park one of our national treasures?

The DAR sponsors an American History Essay Contest yearly to encourage young people to think creatively about the nation's history and to learn it in a new light.
