The Smooth Sound Dance Band accompanied Delaware’s own Jackie McCabe, who brought an eloquent evening to spectators at Milton's Music in the Park.
The weather was great, and it was a pleasant evening to unwind with neighbors and friends. The jazz performance was carried to the audience without amplification - an unusual feat for outdoors with a huge number of guests.
Director Tony Perrone said, “Some music styles are better performed by a big band.” The musical selections heard and enjoyed by the audience included In "The Mood," "String of Pearls," "Satin Doll," "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and more.
Vocalist Jackie McCabe remembers her parents were great dancers and played big band music often. She learned most tunes from her dad as he filled the home and the car trips with his singing of dance band tunes.
McCabe performed with the Bob Wagner Orchestra in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Approached by Perrone in 2010 to perform as band vocalist, McCabe jumped at the chance to share her musical talents. “It has been wonderful,” said McCabe. “The most fun is watching people in the audience sing along with me. It’s important to keep this music alive. It is so American and so much a part of our history."
McCabe’s repertoire included "The Nearness of You," "Embraceable You," "Someone to Watcher Over Me," "Witchcraft," and more.
The “Smooth Sound Dance Band” is an ensemble of the Milford Community Band which was founded by Joe Lear 21 years ago. For details about the band go to www.milfordcommunityband.org.
