Oldest Civil War veteran in Memorial Day parade

George Washington Baker was in his 90s when this photograph was taken of him riding in the back of a car in a Wilmington Memorial Day Parade in the late 1930s. Baker served in Nield’s Ind. Battery of Delaware’s Light Artillery unit on the side of the Union. He made it through the war alive and died on Oct. 18, 1940.  He is buried in Riverview Cemetery in New Castle County.
