The Village Improvement Association recently dedicated its new community book box on the sidewalk in front of the VIA Clubhouse on Grenoble Place, just off the Boardwalk across from the Henlopen Hotel. The public may take from and return books to the book box, which is similar to Little Free Library project boxes around the world. With the book box, the VIA intends to provide easy access to sharing books that have been read and loved.
As a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and a women's volunteer organization in Rehoboth Beach for over 100 years, the VIA has always promoted literacy as one of its contributions to the community. Members volunteer as mentors, tutors, Read Aloud readers and helpers at local libraries.
The VIA would like to thank all who helped make this project a reality. D.F. Quillen and Sons Inc. General Contractors, with Fred Ward as the project supervisor, built and donated the book box. Jon and Kathy Osterholm primed and painted the white paint foundation and put on the sealing coats. Fay Kempton, a VIA artist, painted the murals on the outside, and Cynthia and Harry Ritthaler provided the supports and installed the book box. The VIA members hope this new addition to its community literacy efforts will provide many pleasurable hours of reading to visitors and residents alike.
