DAY 24 • 5 SEPTEMBER 2017 • KALAMAZOO
We jumped on this day early, left all our worries behind in Kalamazoo, found our way to the Kalamazoo-Haven Trail (Kalamazoo to South Haven) and hoped that the early start would foil the chances of another westerly head wind spiking our dendrites. It worked, especially with the close tree cover over the trail.
At an intersection in the little town of Gobles, we encountered a covey of attractive young women taking a break in their ride. I looked around for cameras and lights but saw none. I was sure I had stumbled into the filming of a Sex In The City segment. Within five minutes we had discussed about 50 different topics with contributions from all the characters along with plenty of smiles and joking.
Impressed with our journey, Debi asked if we ever fought. “Like cats and dogs,” I said. “But Becky’s always right.” We all laughed
I told them it put me in mind of the time that former Cape Henlopen School District Superintendent Frank Mercer stood up at a Rotary meeting and gave a good news dollar.
“This dollar is in honor of Anna Jane’s and my 50th wedding anniversary.”
Members clapped and then I asked Frank to what he attributed the success of his marriage.
‘You know,” he said, “when we were first married, we sat down at the kitchen table and agreed then and there that I would make all the major decisions and Anna Jane would make all the minor decisions. There have been no major decisions.”
Then we traded photos and went our merry way, cruising into South Haven at about 1 p.m. where we found a prosperous little lakeside resort bustling with people closing out their Labor Day weekend holiday.
I hope the weekend was good for everyone. And thanks as always for taking the time to read these ramblings.
