Delaware’s poultry industry in its earliest days

September 27, 2017

This photograph from May 11, 1928 shows state-of-the-art, commercial-level poultry facilities as they stood at that time. These are chicken houses on the Hillside Poultry Farm in Selbyville.  Delaware’s poultry industry was in its infancy at the time, Selbyville was ground zero, and Sussex County was leading the way toward development of an economic driver which now counts its annual chickens and dollars in the hundreds of billions. Sussex County continues as the largest poultry producing county in the United States.
