Mares Bears quilters win blue ribbons at 2011 Delaware State Fair

August 9, 2011

Mares Bears Quilt Shop in Lewes recently announced three members of its staff were blue ribbon quilt winners at the 2011 Delaware State Fair.

Ludmilla "Lucy" Morgan, a retired beauty shop owner, only started quilting in the last few years. Not only a quilter but an artist and designer, Morgan has a longarm business. She won seven blue ribbons this year and last year won the Governor's Award for her quilting efforts. Morgan is the only quilter in Delaware to have a quilt accepted for exhibit at the Paducah Quilt Festival in Kentucky.

Loretta Seibert, a native Delawarean, took up quilting when she and her husband retired from their heating and air conditioning company. Seibert has entered the state fair for many years and has eight blue ribbons as well as many awards.

Eileen Long recently moved to Delaware from Frederick, Md., and took up quilting after 40 years in the nursing profession. A novice to the fair and with much encouragement from Seibert to enter, Long took a blue ribbon in the pieced, quilted by a long-armer category.

The quilts will be on display over Labor Day weekend at Mares Bears during normal business hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, Mondays through Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m., Sundays and holidays. The shop is at 528 East Savannah Road, just over the drawbridge toward Lewes Beach. For information, call 302-644-0556.
