Cape boys’ lax wins Henlopen Conference title

Vikings to face Sanford in first round of DIAA Tourney
May 18, 2018

The rains fell in buckets and so did the shots for the Cape boys’ lacrosse team as they poured in 23 goals against Milford to claim the Henlopen Conference Championship 23-2 at the DE Turf Complex May 18.

“It was a good kickoff for the postseason,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “Everybody played, and a lot of guys got in the scorebook. We shared the ball and everyone put themselves in the position to be successful. We did a good job in finding open guys.”

Luke D’Ambrogi led the Vikings’ scoring with six goals and three assists. Finbar Rishko added four goals and an assist. Gabe Best and JP Heid tallied three scores each, while Jack Dennis and Timmy Kelley each cranked the rock for two goals. Adem Tekmen, Ryan Diacont and Aarin Burton each notched one goal. Getting one helper each were Andre Currie, Blake Gipko, Burton, Diacont, Rishko, Liam Zolper, Ben Weathersby, Jaden Davis and Brandon Corder.

Cape outshot the Bucs 44-6. Bucs goalie Shane Gaglione stopped 11 shots, while Cape keeper Baxter Travers made one save.

“We were ready to go tonight,” said Cape defender Timmy Kelley. “That loss to Appo got to us, and we’ve been waiting to do some damage like we did tonight.”

After the first few minutes of the game, there was no doubt that the Vikings were going to do just that.

“We have a fairly deep bench, and we wanted to get everyone in and give them some good runs,” said junior attack Luke D’Ambrogi, who has scored 12 in the last two games. “We wanted to get everyone some minutes and experience.”

The Vikings enter the DIAA State Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 13 Sanford at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 22, at Cape’s Legends Stadium.

“The goal is to win it,” Kelley said.
