Cape/Georgetown Junior All-Stars win first game at Eastern Regional

Kye Wells sent a first-pitch fastball over the fence for a grand slam in the second inning to help pace the Cape/Georgetown Junior League All-Stars to a 15-0 win over Connecticut in an opening-round game of the Eastern Regionals in Freehold, N.J. 

"It felt great because it was my first homer in the junior league playoffs," said Wells, a rising freshman at Sussex Tech.

The Cape/Georgetown squad put up nine hits in the game. Along with Wells’ shot over the left-field fence, Nick Cox pounded a homer in the first to drive home Josh Reinhold. Jonathan Stokley and Cox each had two RBIs, while Carter Breasure, Timmy Hitchcock, Paris Mitchell and Kenseth Taylor all knocked in one run. 

Cape/Georgetown used four pitchers in the game to preserve their pitching for later in the tournament. Cox picked up the win, and Josh Reinhold, Timmy Hitchcock and Kye Wells each threw fewer than 24 pitches. They will all be available for the game with Maryland at 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3. They collectively allowed just two Connecticut hits. 

"It's a great way to start," said Cape/Georgetown manager Zac Crouch. "We were hitting the ball, and we were able to save all of our pitchers for Friday's game.”

The Junior League Eastern Regional features 11 teams from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and a host team from Freehold, N.J. Cape/Georgetown fell in their second game to Maryland 6-5 Aug. 3.

Josh Reinhold and Kye Wells each had a RBI for Cape/Georgetown. Wells slammed a triple and Nick Cox delivered with a double and a stolen base.

Down 6-0 in the second inning, Reinhold cam in from the bull pen and shut down Maryland striking out nine Maryland batters.

“We had one bad inning,” said Cape/Georgetown manager Zac Crouch. “And we just couldn’t pull it out.”
