December 13, 2018

The 12th annual Run with Santa 5K contested Dec. 9 at Cape Henlopen State Park brought out 104 athletes, mostly the hardcore local crowd, a day after the Rehoboth Marathon.

“I seems like I’ve been up for 48 straight hours,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “I’m not sure if I’m seeing all these Santa suits or if I’m hallucinating. But like yesterday, it is really cold.”

RJ Senseny, 15, from Selbyville was the overall winner in 18:25. Dashing through the trails trying to run down Senseny were masters winner Matt Sparacino in 19:57, Jakobb Hayes in 20:58, Gavin Furlong in 21:00, female winner Emily Trout in 22:09, Andrew Boruta in 22:10, Hankie Pahnke in 22:32, Brian Trout in 22:43, Shauna Hanley in 22:44 and Kristin Thompson in 23:40.

Female masters winner was Natalie Dorset, 51, from New York City.

Nolan Furlong, 5, won the boys’ 9-and-under category in 35:05. Emma Thompson, 9, won that age group for girls in 31:06.

The 10-13 age group was won by Jacob Hayes, 13, in 20:58.

Bernie Gallagher, 78, from Rehoboth ran 29:37 and edged out Jack Huxtable, 80, in 30:55.

Smooth and steady Jamie Wollord, 80, from Rockville, Md., cruised to a win in her one-person age group, running 51:17.

The next and last Seashore Striders race for the 2018 calendar year is the 16th annual Race into the New Year at noon, Monday, Dec. 31, at the Bandstand in Rehoboth.
