A Dewey scene familiar to Alice Walsh in the mid 1900s

February 14, 2019

An explanation on the back of this postcard from the 1950s reports that the view is looking toward the southwest over Dewey Beach from the ocean. It shows a slowly developing resort community with Wilson’s Boat Company, Johnny Marsh’s Yacht Basin and, in the center, the brightly colored Rainbow Cove rental cottages. The scene shown here would have looked familiar to Alice Walsh, one of Dewey Beach’s original commissioners, when she was a young woman. Walsh passed away recently after a long life centered around her extensive family and Dewey Beach community. This image is from the George and Irene Caley Postcard Collection.
