Two players down, Cape soccer wins at Sussex Academy 3-0
Goalie interrupted was the subplot April 9 at Sussex Academy, as Cape starter Lucy Siranides was sidelined with a busted knee brace and FedEx couldn’t deliver a new one by game time. Stellar midfielder Madi Swontek was across the pond on a school-sponsored French field trip.
“That’s the second brace I’ve broken,” Siranides said. “I do it from sliding to stop shots, not from kicking.”
“We are a different team without Madi on the field, and Lucy is crazy good, but once again our defense came through,” said coach Parick Kilby after his Vikings defeated Sussex Academy 3-0 to improve to 6-0. All wins have been shutouts.
Madison Nichols played goalie the entire game, and she is part of four shutouts on the season. In some early games, Cape used multiple goalies while waiting for Siranides to clear medical waivers.
The Seahawks had dangerous runs early in the game led by senior striker Delaney Smith.
Cape scored at 29 minutes into the first half on a crafty goal from Lindsey Swontek with a setup from Brooke Hollingsworth. A minute later, it was Hollingsworth from Swontek for a 2-0 Cape halftime advantage.
Freshman Lily Ashby scored at the 50-minute mark of the game for the eventual 3-0 final score.
Darby Klopp, playing on her 18th birthday, anchored the Cape defense along with Leah Marsh, Lindsey Reynolds and Josephine Ingerski.
Midfielders Sydney Zych, Claire Rasin, Paige Ludwicki and Lily Ashby played their usual tough two-way games.
Cape is slated to face Sussex Central Thursday, April 11, then play a Friday night game versus Concord before rolling into “shark week,” hosting Indian River Tuesday, April 16, and Sussex Tech Thursday, April 18.
Sussex Academy dropped to 5-2 on the season. The Seahawks face Milford Thursday, April 11.
