Miss Delaware 2019 crowned in Lewes
The 78th Miss Delaware Competition, hosted by Miss Delaware 2004 Linda Kurtz Risk, highlighted 12 candidates from across the state as they competed in on-stage interview, talent, evening gown and social impact statement.
Miss Hockessin, Hillary May, was crowned Miss Delaware 2019 June 15 during the organization’s annual competition at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.
As Miss Delaware 2019, May will travel across the state speaking on her social impact initiative, “Let’s Talk, Breaking the Stigma Surrounding Mental Illness,” and promoting the Children’s Miracle Network, the national platform partner of the Miss America Organization.
She will also spend her year of service speaking with and advocating before the media, public officials, civic and charitable groups and others. She will go on to compete for the title of Miss America 2020, date and location to be announced later this year.
May, age 23, resides in Pike Creek, and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Delaware School of Education, specializing in Learning Sciences. She received a B.A. in psychology, with honors from Butler University. Along with the title of Miss Delaware, Hillary won a $10,000 scholarship to further her education.
This year, the Miss Delaware Organization provided over $35,000 in scholarship opportunities for its candidates. For her talent, May sang “I Could Have Danced All Night” from the musical “My Fair Lady.” In addition to winning Miss Delaware, she was also a finalist for the Debi Wilson Community Service Award and the People’s Choice Award Winner. First runner-up in the competition was Nia Andrews, Miss Greenville, who was the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship. Winner of the Miss America Academic Scholarship award was Victoria Muir, Miss America State Community Service award winner was Jenna Hitchens, and overall talent went to Kaylynn Pride.
