Clear Space to perform ‘Three Tall Women’ at Milton Theatre Oct. 3
“Three Tall Women” is Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning portrayal of women – characters known only as A, B and C – at three stages of their lives: youth, middle age, and old age. Clear Space Theatre Company will perform this show at Milton Theatre at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3.
The play also is an allegory, examining the lives of all women at three pivotal points in history: the beginning, middle and end of the 20th century. “I read this play when it was first published and thought, ‘Hallelujah! My height (5-feet-10) is finally an asset!’” said Elaine Faye, who plays B. She said, “It’s a deeply moving exploration of life – the good, the bad and the ugly.”
Meg Kelly, who plays A, said, “While this play is a drama, there’s quite a lot of humor in it. I really enjoy and appreciate Albee’s work. He creates such three-dimensional characters and addresses so many of the things everyone thinks about as they age. It is an unvarnished look at the choices we make, their outcomes – for better or worse – and how we try to make peace with them.”
Faye said, “What I find most challenging is also what I find most appealing: The opportunity to work with an intimate cast of four characters whose inter-connectedness is the crux of the play. The collaboration, exploration and focus required is both exhilarating and exhausting.”
Kelly said, “A is elderly, so I’m having to work on accurately portraying her physically. Also, her mind is not always clear or rational; finding the thought connections between the spoken lines can be difficult. Add to that, she’s riding an emotional roller coaster—and I need to feel all those ups and downs.”
Also featuring Katharine Ariyan as C and Richard Nazzaro as Boy, “Three Tall Women” is sponsored by Ida and Jeff Rowe. The play continues at Clear Space Theatre in Rehoboth Beach at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, and Oct. 4 and 5; and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Tickets for each show are $17 to $32.
