Milton park pavilion officially renamed for Charlie Fleetwood

February 11, 2020

When Milton Town Council voted on renaming the pavilion in Milton Memorial Park after Councilman Charlie Fleetwood, there was only one ‘nay’ vote.

Councilman Charlie Fleetwood.

The vote was facetious, of course, as Fleetwood often finds himself embarrassed by such things - he left the room before the idea of renaming the pavilion for him was first brought up - but for his colleagues on the council, renaming the pavilion was a chance to honor Fleetwood for his 30 years of community service.

“My friend. My brother from another mother,” said Councilman Emory West of Fleetwood.

Council first debated the idea of renaming the pavilion for Fleetwood Jan. 6 when Fleetwood returned to his seat after nearly a year away due to health problems related to spinal stenosis. Fleetwood was instrumental in founding Concerts in the Park, the popular summertime concert series. Steve Crawford, chairman of the Milton Community Foundation, suggested that council rename the pavilion for Fleetwood, and the council readily agreed.

Besides the concerts, Fleetwood has served as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Milton Historical Society, Friends of the Milton Public Library, Milton Community Foundation and Milton Chamber of Commerce.

The pavilion will officially be named the Charlie Fleetwood Gazebo; a naming ceremony will take place sometime this summer during one of the concerts in the park, although an official date has not been set.
