Kevin Smith named athletic director at Cape

April 8, 2020

Cape Henlopen School District has announced the hiring of Kevin Smith as the district’s new athletic director.

Smith’s hiring was approved by the board of education at its April 7 virtual meeting.

Smith is a graduate of Towson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management and was a four-year starting quarterback on the football team. After his graduation in 1999, he spent 14 years teaching at Prince William County Schools in Manassas, Va. He earned his master of education degree from George Mason University in August 2006. In fall 2013, Smith brought his teaching and athletic expertise to Delaware as a special education teacher and head football coach at Polytech High School, where he later became athletic director. Smith most recently was the athletic director at Sussex Central High School.

“We are excited to welcome Kevin Smith to our Cape family,” said Superintendent Bob Fulton. “His experience in the classroom, as a coach and as an athletic director makes him a valuable asset to our sports program here at Cape.”

“I am honored to have been selected for the athletic director position at Cape,” said Smith. “Cape’s athletic teams are some of the best in the state, and I look forward to continuing to grow the program alongside the parents, staff, coaches and student-athletes.”

Smith was hired following the January 2020 retirement announcement of current Athletic Director Bob Cilento.
