Helen M. Carter, loving caretaker

April 17, 2020

Helen M. Carter, 89, formerly of Redden, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020, at Brandywine Nursing Center in Wilmington. She was born in Milford Dec. 26, 1930, the daughter of Charles Dewey and Ethel King.

After graduating from Georgetown High School, she was employed by the telephone company in Georgetown. After marrying Warren, whom she met at Fort Miles at Cape Henlopen while he was serving with the U.S. Army, she moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. She worked in D.C. for many years as a receptionist for a real estate firm. After retiring, she returned to Redden to live next to and help care for her father, Dewey.

Helen was an avid reader, loved to dance, and enjoyed spending time outdoors tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She was also a talented home cook who loved to entertain for her family and friends. She was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother who liked to open her home to those she loved, as well as go for outings around her native Sussex County. At heart, Helen was a caretaker who found joy in bringing happiness to others. She had a lovely smile and shared it with everyone she met.

She is preceded in death by her husband Warren and son Michael Carter.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Catherine; grandchildren, Matthew Carter and his wife Erin, and Alison Carter-Lazalde and her husband Logan; and great-grandchildren: Keely, Hattie and Rowan Carter; as well as extended family and friends.

A graveside service is being planned for a later date.

Memorial donations in Helen’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market St., Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
