Stan Mills, a former longtime commissioner in Rehoboth Beach, has announced he is running for mayor of the resort, taking on incumbent Mayor Paul Kuhns.
Mills said he filed his petition as a candidate June 1. Kuhns, who was elected mayor in 2017, announced his bid for re-election May 1.
“It’s only been about nine months since I stepped away from a 12-year run as an elected official in Rehoboth Beach, and I am ready to get back into public service,” Mills said after filing his petition. “I have found too much unpalatable coming from the center of the commissioners’ table. I believe I can provide better leadership.”
Mills said in the coming days, he will formulate his campaign platform, “which many can rest assured will be a continuation of my philosophies cultured over my past four three-year terms in office, starting with transparency and enhanced communications.”
Mills had been a community activist before being elected to serve as city commissioner in 2007. He played a major role in the rebuilding of the Boardwalk in 2009, and served on committees that worked on the new City Hall and the ocean outfall project.
After 12 years as commissioner Mills announced in May 2019 that he would not seek re-election. At the time, Mills said he and wife have lived in Rehoboth full time for 21 years, and it was time for a break from public service. Less than a year after stepping down, Mills said he has decided to seek the city’s top job.
The filing deadline for candidates is June 8; the deadline to register to vote is July 9.
