Food Bank of Delaware reaches out to families

Georgetown-area mobile food pantry provides staples to 1,500 households
August 6, 2020

Food Bank of Delaware started off the new month with drive-thru mobile food pantries in each Delaware county. The pantries were set up to feed up to 1,500 households with staples, including meat, fruit and vegetables in the United States Department of Agriculture program.

On Aug. 3, lines were long as volunteers, Delaware Army National Guard members and Delaware Department of Transportation workers provided food to a non-stop line of vehicles at Crossroad Community Church west of Georgetown. Distributions also took place at Dover International Speedway and in Glasgow.

So far, the Food Bank has sponsored 16 mass distributions - five in Sussex County - giving away more than 1.6 million pounds of food.

Donations of food are needed and can be dropped off at the Milford site, 1040 Mattlind Way, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. Most needed items include canned fruits, vegetables and meats, peanut butter, pasta and sauce, rice, hot and cold cereal and healthy snacks.

Emergency food is available at the Milford location from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., Monday-Friday, and from 8:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. on fourth Tuesdays of each month.
