Cape boys’ lacrosse runs down Appo 17-2

April 12, 2021

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team ran the clock at Appoquinimink April 8, leading 13-1 at halftime, then cruising home for a 17-2 victory.

The Vikings were intense during pregame warmups and started off slow in two losses to Gilman of Maryland and Episcopal Academy of Philadelphia.

“We have to play the first quarter like we’re behind in the fourth,” said coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “It’s not just shooting; it’s ground balls, clearing passes and eliminating turnovers. Appoquinimink was 2-0, and we did not take them lightly.”

Cape was led in scoring by Hank D’Ambrogi with four goals, Gabe Best and Mikey Frederick each with three, Luke Burton with two, and single goals from Jaden Davis, Will Bragg, Blake Gipko, Chanceler Johnson and Nate Sivels.

Cape assists were D’Ambrogi with seven, Frederick with two, and one each from Davis, Best, Jack Schell and  C.J. Fritchman.

Goalies Michael Sposato and Carson Kammerer each had two saves while allowing one goal.

Coach D’Ambrogi said, “Jaden Davis, Will Bragg and Blake Gipko, all captains, give us a really good midfield unit that can all play offense, defense and get ground balls. We are lucky to have three guys that have played together and play to each other’s strengths.

“The program has a lot of enthusiastic players, as indicated by the amount of players working hard over spring break. We are fortunate that Atlantic Lacrosse prepares them so well, and we want to make sure their experience in high school is fulfilling.”

Cape's next game is at home at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, against Milford. The Vikings will play at Dover at 7 p.m., Friday, April 16.
