Delaware Tech softball wins NJCAA Mid-Atlantic Championship

The Delaware Technical Community College softball team remained undefeated in postseason play by winning the 2021 NJCAA Mid-Atlantic District Championship May 15 in two straight games over Potomac State College of West Virginia.

The win propels Delaware Tech into the 2021 NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament, which will be held May 25-29 in Oxford, Ala. It is the first national championship tournament appearance for the program since 2014.

“We got here with our bats and good pitching,” head coach Guy Wilkins said. “We’ve hit the ball all year long and our pitching has been phenomenal. We are fortunate to have this great group of girls.”

The team is led by freshman third baseman Macey Myers, a Milford graduate, who is batting .551 through the regular season and playoffs, which places her eighth overall in NJCAA Division II schools in the nation. Myers leads the team in home runs (9), RBI (43), and hits (38).

“The team came out to practice every day, working 100 percent and working on fielding and hitting equally, which is why we are so strong as a team,” Myers said. “At the beginning of the season, I didn’t know what to expect. And as a team, we’ve blown away all of my expectations.”

Starting pitcher Lauren Smith, a freshman from Snow Hill, Md., commanded the circle throughout the season and currently has a 9-0 overall record with a 2.42 ERA and 55 strikeouts.

“Pitching at practice and taking the time to pitch on my own really helped me to have a great season and a great record,” Smith said. “Our team has a really tight bond, we all get along, and we all go toward one goal and that’s to win.”

Other standout performers include sophomore catcher Courtney Kohel of Milford, who is batting .486 with 21 RBIs, six home runs and 35 total hits. Fellow sophomore Kaylie Moore, of Colonel Richardson High School in Federalsburg, Md., the team’s starting shortstop, is batting .417 with 30 hits. Sophomore first baseman Sydney Tyndall, a graduate of Delmar High School, is batting .415 with 22 hits.

“Winning districts feels really good,” Kohel said. “We have the determination and motivation to win nationals too.”
