Juneteenth Community Garden Project cultivates unity in Georgetown

July 13, 2021

“Life begins the day you start a garden.” - Chinese proverb

The Juneteenth Community Garden Project held its second groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, July 5, at the Richard Allen School on Railroad Avenue in Georgetown.

Sponsors adding to the project were the Richard Allen Coalition, 100 Women Who Care Southern Delaware, Teach a Person to Fish Society, Delaware Hispanic Commission and Delaware Interfaith Power and Light.

Members of the Georgetown community have been attracted to the garden and have the opportunity to claim one of the garden plots for their use.

“This project will hopefully bring the community together,” said 100 Women Who Care Southern Delaware founder Jeri Berc.

Plots have been laid out and prepared, and different kinds of vegetables have been planted by the people taking care of them.

Anyone in the area can come and work a plot, make a garden and take care of it for the beauty of the Richard Allen School.

“We want to honor Richard Allen,” Berc said.

Dinner was served to the attendees who brought their own dinner setup for a waste-free picnic. Each was prepared with vegetables donated by local farmers.

"The coalition is happy to host this new garden, which honors our history and helps to strengthen our community today,” said Jane Hovington, president of the the Richard Allen Coalition.
