Lewes capital projects meeting set Aug. 25
The Lewes Capital Projects Committee will meet at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at city hall and via Zoom. The group will discuss the Phase 25 street rehabilitation project, parking lots at Otis Smith Park and Schley Avenue, the addition to the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center, and a space study and interim improvements for the police station. Other future projects to be discussed include a revitalization project for Monroe/Railroad/Adams avenues, the Phase 26 street rehabilitation project, and the installation of more charging stations in city parking lots. Lewes Public Art Committee to meet
The Lewes Public Art Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at city hall and via Zoom. The group will discuss the two existing public art projects in Canalfront Park and George H.P. Smith Park. They will also talk about a mosaic project for Canalfront and Smith parks. Committee members will discuss a proposal for an artistic bike rack for Third Street, then begin conversations about public art exhibitions for 2022. Lewes Brewing Co. review set Aug. 26
The Lewes Joint Site Development Ad Hoc Review Committee will meet at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, at city hall and via Zoom. The group will review and possibly provide a recommendation on the site plan for Lewes Brewing Company, planned for Savannah Road near the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail crossing. Agave applies for Rt. 1 liquor permit
Agave continues to progress toward the completion of its new location at 19178 Coastal Highway, north of Rehoboth Beach. Most recently, the restaurant applied for a liquor permit at the location. According to a notice from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commissioner, Agave has applied for a license as a restaurant to sell liquor, to sell liquor on Sunday, to have a patio with live entertainment, to have external speakers and to have a paging system. The ABCC is required to hold a hearing if they receive one or more documents containing at least 10 signatures of residents or property owners located within one mile of the property. Protests must be received by Friday, Sept. 17. To file an objection to the granting of this license, write the ABCC at the Carvel State Office Building, 820 North French St., Third Floor, Wilmington, DE 19801. Sussex P&Z meeting on Aug. 26
Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. IR district to stagger school opening dates
The Indian River School District will implement a staggered opening for the 2021-22 school year in September.
The first day of school for students in kindergarten, grade 6, grade 9 and the Howard T. Ennis School (excluding preschool) will be Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Students in grades 1-5, 7-8 and 10-12 will return to school Wednesday, Sept. 8.
Preschool programs, including Project Village, TOTS and Howard T. Ennis, will begin Monday, Sept. 13.
The district will return to a five-day, in-person schedule for all students in 2021-22. There are no plans to continue a hybrid, remote/in-person model.
COVID-19 protocols regarding face coverings and social distancing will be communicated to parents before schools open.
Local students join Albright Class of 2025
Hailing from 21 states and seven different countries, more than 57 percent of Albright College's class of 2025 are the first in their families to attend college, and all have demonstrated that they are engaged citizens with vast participation in community service, leadership and co-curricular activities like the arts, music, and athletics. Two Millsboro students are among the new freshmen. Liana Handlin, a graduate of Sussex Central Senior High School, is majoring in fashion. J'Sean Matthews, a graduate of Sussex Technical High School, is majoring in history.
