Psychologist DeSteno to discuss ‘How God Works’ Sept. 22
The Lewes Public Library and Browseabout books will present a live, online discussion with David DeSteno, professor of psychology at Northeastern University, about his new book “How God Works: The Science Behind the Benefits of Religion” Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m.
In this absorbing work, DeSteno reveals how numerous religious practices from around the world improve emotional and physical well-being. From increased compassion associated with Buddhist meditation to improved mother-child bonding from Shinto childbirth rituals, DeSteno demonstrates why religious practices and rituals are so beneficial to those who follow them. He explains readers do not need to be religious to benefit from the wisdom religion has to offer, and shows how anyone, regardless of their faith, can incorporate these practices to live a more meaningful, successful and satisfying life.
DeSteno will be joined in conversation by Christian Miller, the A.C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University and author of numerous publications on ethics, moral psychology and philosophy of religion. To register for the Zoom-based event, visit the Virtual Programs for Adults page at the Lewes Public Library website, lewes.lib.de.us or go to tinyurl.com/zoomwithauthors.

He is the author of “Emotional Success” and “The Truth About Trust,” and is a regular contributor to the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and many other publications. He received his PhD in psychology from Yale University.
