Eco-Faith celebration to honor Bishop Kevin Brown Sept. 26

September 22, 2021

Environmentally focused nonprofit Delaware Interfaith Power and Light will honor Bishop Kevin S. Brown of the Episcopal Church in Delaware at its Eco-Faith fall celebration and fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26, at Ashland Nature Center, 3511 Barley Mill Road, Hockessin.

The event is a special evening to support and celebrate the organization’s faithful climate action work and Brown’s ongoing efforts. Attendees will be able to network with other climate champions, interfaith partners and elected officials in the beautiful setting of Ashland Nature Center. Refreshments will be available from Ole Food truck, there will be live entertainment, and a nature hike will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. for those who wish to participate.

Brown has exhibited leadership in promoting environmental justice and has led the efforts of the Episcopal Church in Delaware to be environmentally friendly. The Episcopal Diocese is committed to a broad-reaching goal to reduce greenhouse emissions and fossil fuel energy use in each of its facilities by 50 percent within a 10-year period. To help achieve that goal, Brown has encouraged diocesan parishes to get energy audits and consider solar power systems as part of adopting the Genesis Covenant.

Delaware now joins other dioceses across the church recognizing the importance of taking practical actions to address climate change. Demonstrating his commitment, Brown has joined other faith leaders in publicly advocating for renewable power along with Delaware Interfaith Power & Light’s Climate Conversation.

The diocese has solar installations at its administration offices and at Camp Arrowhead, as well as churches throughout Delaware. Episcopal school St. Andrew’s of Middletown has been repeatedly recognized for its sustainability work and received a Green Ribbon School designation from the U.S. Department of Education.

Delaware Interfaith Power & Light is dedicated to building a nondenominational religious response to address climate change and environmental justice. Since nearly every faith tradition believes that human beings have a special responsibility to care for creation, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light provides a central resource to help achieve this mission. It offers free climate educational programs, provides no-cost energy audits of facilities, and provides coordination and awareness of state and national programs designed to help religious institutions and their members participate in climate change mitigation and advocating for 100 percent clean energy future for Delaware.

Its Windows of Hope initiative is a community-based interior storm windows training, construction and installation project to assist lower-income residents. The community partnership lowers residents’ utility costs while increasing comfort in their homes, increases the value of community infrastructure while decreasing the negative impact on the environment, fosters interfaith and intergenerational partnerships, engages members in hands-on service projects for their neighbors, and provides training using local labor to offer basic skill sets and a potential source of income.

Delaware Interfaith Power & Light asks that attendees of the Eco-Faith Fall Celebration are vaccinated and/ or wear masks. The event is sponsored by Tekstrom software testing and training services.
