George Aaron Long, church deacon
George Aaron Long, 68, of Lewes passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021. He was born in Lewes Jan. 8, 1953, son of the late George Showell and Charity Wilson-Long.
Born and raised in Lewes, he attended Lewes Elementary School, Cape Henlopen High School and later went on to join the Job Corps. For many years, George worked in Salisbury, Md., at Perdue Farms. He later worked for Allen Foods until his retirement. George was an active member at both New Zion A.M.E. Church in Harbeson and Haven Outreach Community Center in Georgetown, where he served as a deacon for eight-plus years.
George was a kind soul who loved being around others. He enjoyed time spent helping his friends and family, or anyone who needed a helping hand. Watching western movies, shooting pool, reading his Bible, being active in fellowship and remaining loyal to his ministry were all favorite pastimes. Most of all, George cherished the time spent creating memories with his loving family. George was a companion, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend. His kind heart will always be remembered. George was preceded in death by his mother and father, George Showell and Charity Wilson-Long; a brother, Harold Hayes; three sisters; Gladys Long, Cynthia Long and Judith Tank; one uncle, Aaron Wilson; and one nephew, John Long.
He is survived by his wife, Lolita Long; his daughter, Delores Person; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren of Sussex County; three sisters, Shirley Perry of Milton, Jane Showell of Milton and Delema Lott of Lewes; six brothers, Gregory Long of Smyrna, James Long of Pennsylvania, Charles Long (Norisa) of Georgetown, Timothy Long (Fawn) of Georgetown, Kemp Brittingham (Threasa) of Milton, and George Downing (Sheila) of Milton; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, at noon, at Philadelphia Pentecostal Holiness Church, 13724 S. Old State Rd., Ellendale. Family and friends can visit two hours prior to service.
