January 26, 2022

The Cape girls’ basketball team defeated Sussex Tech 65-31 Jan. 25, to move to 8-3 on the season while holding a food drive for the Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club/Rehoboth Sunrise Rotary Club.

Three Vikings scored in double figures. Senior Morgan Mahoney led the Vikings with 17 points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists and two blocks. Julia Saleur tallied 11 points and six rebounds, and assisted on four scores. Mehkia Applewhite recorded 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Lauryn Head contributed nine points. Kelly Bragg scored six and grabbed six rebounds.

Tech’s Maleyah Bell led the Ravens with 11 points.

Saleur spoke about the importance of the food drive.

“It took a lot of time, work and effort to pull the food drive together so nicely,” Saleur said. “I’m so happy the food drive went great. We had so much food donated. Everyone was so generous. I think we made a difference in people’s lives. We were able to overflow the school food pantry. It is so important to me that we help everyone around us, especially ones in need. I’m so thankful for everyone who helped out. Without them, none of this would have gone as well as it did.”

Then Cape JV squad moved to 7-1 with a 51-11 win over the JV Ravens. Faith Re led the JV Vikings with 16 points, while Mya Maull and Frances Williams hit for 10 points.

The Vikings host Sussex Central Thursday, Jan. 27, then travel to Sanford Saturday, Jan. 29.
