The Cape Henlopen school board voted Feb. 14 not to renew the contract of Cape High head football coach JD Maull, Cape Superintendent Bob Fulton said.
“We appreciate all that coach Maull has done for the football program and his dedication to our student-athletes over the past four years,” Fulton said.
In March 2018, the board approved Maull’s appointment as head football coach, replacing Bill Collick, who retired at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Maull amassed an 8-29 record the past four years, going 1-9 in the 2018-19 school year, 2-8 in 2019-20, 4-3 in 2020-21 and 1-9 in 2021-22.
According to the 2019-24 contract between the school board and union, the high school head football coach salary is $4,125 the first two years, $5,156 in years three and four, $6,188 in year five, and is thereafter increased annually by $100.
Maull previously led the Saint Georges Technical High School Hawks to 12 playoff games in five years. He was named Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association State Coach of the Year in January 2013, after St. Georges ended the 2012 season with a perfect 10-0 record, losing to Archmere 19-13 in the first round of the state playoffs.
