Sussex Tech commits to establishing Coast Guard JROTC unit

March 30, 2022

Sussex Technical High School has been selected as the new home of only the fifth Coast Guard JROTC Unit in the country.

Dr. Kevin E. Carson, Sussex County Vocational Technical School District superintendent, announced with school board approval, the district has entered into an agreement with the United States Coast Guard.

"The JROTC option fits with our mission and purpose of providing high-quality career and leadership opportunities for our young men and women graduating from Sussex Tech,” said Carson.

“The opportunity made sense with our coastal environment and the support of the local Coast Guard stations nearby,” said Dr. Matthew B. Donovan, Sussex Tech principal.

“There is a U.S. Coast Guard Station here on the Lewes/Cape May peninsula, giving our students plenty of hands-on access to real-world technology,” said Donovan. “Maritime positions are in high demand, and giving students the opportunity to receive this experience and possibly earn certifications in the profession is an added benefit.”

“Coast Guard JROTC is greatly encouraged by the level of commitment and enthusiasm at Sussex Tech from the top down. You all have a lot to be proud of, and we are excited to be joining forces with you,” said Commander Clay R. Cromer, Coast Guard JROTC program manager, after the signing ceremony.

The program is slated to begin in fall 2022; student interest is already high and postings for instructor positions have been released.
