Cape baseball falls short against Spalding
The Cape baseball team made the raucous Archbishop Spalding dugout go quiet in the seventh inning April 2, as the Vikings brought the potential winning run at the plate, with bases loaded and two outs. The Cavs were able to escape with a 6-3 win.
“We did a nice job at the plate against several D1 commits,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “They strung a few hits together and scored six. We outhit them, but couldn’t string together any hits in big moments. In the seventh, we finally plated three to cut the score in half. Our pitching staff did a good job keeping them off balance and competing.”
The Cape team outhit the Cavs 11-8. Austin Rhue delivered two hits with a double and a run scored. Nick Cox garnered two hits and scored a run. Isaac Terhune, Sam Kerstetter and Paris Mitchell each collected an RBI. Brian Fleming, Josh Reinhold and Justin Marsh each had singles. Owen Daminger was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
The Vikings sent five pitchers to the mound. Reinhold, Rhue, Timmy Hitchcock, Marsh and Daminger all gained experience against the No. 1-ranked Maryland team. They teamed for eight strikeouts in the seven-inning game.
Cody Sharman picked up the win for Spalding. Parker Thomas and Kyle Garrett each had two hits.
The 1-2 Vikings travel to Sussex Tech Tuesday, April 5, to face the 4-0 Ravens.
