The Cape baseball team started quickly and held on in the seventh inning to take home a 3-2 win over previously undefeated Sussex Tech April 5. Cape moves to 2-2, while the Ravens are 4-1.
The Vikings got on the board in the first inning when Josh Reinhold took a fastball and drove it over the center-field fence.
“They threw me a fastball first pitch, and I was on time and jumped on it,” said Reinhold. “We came into the game with nothing to lose and a bunch of energy, and it worked out for us.”
The Vikings scored again in the third when Nick Cox got a hit with two outs and advanced to second on an error. Brenn Scott then singled to score Cox.
Cape added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Austin Rhue walked, advanced to second on a ground ball and got to third on an error. He then scored on a passed ball.
The Ravens made it tight when Jonathan Stokley singled in the bottom of the seventh. Carson Mears walked to move Stokley to second. Brock O’Day singled to score Stokley and advance Mears, who then scored on a wild pitch. Cape’s Reinhold then shut the door with a strikeout to end the game and get the save.
Cox threw 6.2 innings for Cape, striking out seven. He gave up just one earned run to garner the win. Reinhold pitched to one batter and got the save.
Reinhold went 2-for-4 from the plate with a single and a homer. Scott went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Cox and Timmy Hitchcock each got a hit.
“Josh hit a screaming line drive over the fence,” said Cape manager Ben Evick. “Brenn came through in a big situation with an RBI single. We played stellar defense as well. Austin Rhue made an ESPN Top 10 play, slamming into the left-field fence to make a catch. Josh had two Derek Jeter moments at shortstop, and Timmy’s inner Brooks Robinson came out at third base on a couple hard-hit balls.”
For the Ravens, Stokley went 1-for-3, Rosnell Lewis went 1-for-2 and O’Day went 1-for-1 with the lone RBI.
Grant Allen started for the Ravens on the mound, giving up just four hits and striking out six.
Cape will host Indian River Friday, April 8, while the Ravens host Delmar.
