Planning for Joy: Postpartum Education session set May 1
Local childbirth educator Katie Hope, LCCE, owner of Delaware Doula, will host a community event providing education about the postpartum period of pregnancy and information on how to help reduce the risks and severity of postpartum depression and anxiety.
The complimentary class, Planning for Joy: Postpartum Education, is set for 4 p.m., Sunday, May 1, in the community room at Delaware State Police Troop 7, 19444 Mulberry Knoll Road, Lewes.
This community event is for people interested in learning about planning for the postpartum period, and providing resources for postpartum depression and anxiety. It is open to everyone but will focus on individuals who are currently pregnant, or those interested in learning how to support family or friends after the birth of a baby.
There is no cost to attend, but registration is requested. To sign up, go to Eventbrite.com and search Planning for Joy: Postpartum Education.
The postpartum period is often overlooked when one is preparing to have a baby. In many countries, women are nurtured and attentively cared for during the first 40 days after birth to promote recovery and healing for the new mother. In the United States, however, many new parents report feeling overwhelmed, unprepared and lonely during this phase. There is a cultural expectation that women will bounce back and get their bodies back in shape rather than honoring the transformation.
Postpartum depression is the most common complication after birth, and it often goes unreported and untreated. Postpartum depression is now more widely acknowledged and discussed but what is less known is that perinatal mood and anxiety disorders can begin during pregnancy and/or intensify anytime during the first year or two after giving birth.
This event will focus on practical steps and planning people can take to make the transition from pregnancy to parenting a joyful one.
