Cape baseball comes back to defeat Central 5-4

April 22, 2022

The Cape baseball team didn’t get down April 21 when Sussex Central’s Troy Morris blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning to go ahead 4-2. They just kept the bats going and garnered a three-run sixth to earn a 5-4 come-from-behind victory.

Down two in the sixth, Paris Mitchell singled. He moved up to third when Owen Daminger singled to right, then scored on an Austin Rhue ground out. Daminger moved to third, then scored on an error off a hit by Brian Fleming. Fleming then scored on a Josh Reinhold double to retake the lead.

Brogan Evick entered the bottom of the sixth and pitched two shut-down innings to garner the save for Cape.

The Vikings outhit the Knights 7-4. Reinhold went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brenn Scott went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Rhue went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Daminger went 2-for-3.

“Our guys were really excited for this game,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “We wanted our guys to stick to their approach offensively, and we were able to jump out in the first inning. We have been a tested team already this season, so after they scored on the go-ahead grand slam, we were confident in our ability to battle back. Josh [Reinhold] had a huge double off the wall scoring Brian Fleming from first to tie the game. Brogan [Evick] came into a tough situation with a loud, rowdy opposing dugout with a one-run lead. He went three up, three down in the sixth to quiet things down. In the seventh, it was similar pressure, as we were only up a run. He made quick work, shutting them down three up, three down again. It was a big win to put us on top of the Henlopen North division. We have faced some adversity recently with some injuries and losing Timmy [Hitchcock] for three games to strep throat. The next-man-up, team approach we try to instill continues to hold true as guys come through in big situations. Owen Daminger has been that guy playing in Timmy’s place. Every guy on the team is integral in various ways to our team’s success.”

Morris’ slam scored all four of Central’s runs. Reif Steen, Anthony Cannon and Zimir Gardner each had hits for the Knights.

Cape will travel to Smyrna Tuesday, April 26, to face the Eagles.
