March is Red Cross Month: Always first, always ready, always there

March 7, 2012

March is National Red Cross Month, and with it come a number of local events and ways to support the humanitarian mission of the Lower Shore Chapter. To kick off Red Cross Month, the Society of Women Leaders Lower Shore, a women’s arm of the local Red Cross, recently held the Fashion Emergency Little Black Dress Fashion Show and Luncheon.

The Clarion Crystal Ballroom in Ocean City, Md., hosted the luncheon and its 300 enthusiastic guests. Ladies were encouraged to join the Red Cross Movement by taking a CPR or other lifesaving course, or to become a trained volunteer at the local chapter or to help with fundraisers for local disaster relief.

Other March events throughout the Lower Shore Chapter communities (Worcester, Wicomico, Somerset, Accomack, Northhampton counties) include Stephen Decatur, Parkside, Pocomoke and Worcester Prep Junior Red Cross Club’s Disaster Relief and Heroes fundraisers.

Last year during Hurricane Irene, the Lower Shore Chapter assisted with evacuations, helped shelter more than 2,000 individuals in seven facilities and helped arrange for thousands of meals in a two-day period for displaced families. All of these situations were local, and the local Red Cross Chapter was there, providing food, clothing, shelter and compassion.

During Red Cross Month, local businesses and individuals throughout the Lower Shore region are encouraged to contact John Culp, director of the Lower Shore Chapter, at 410-749-5331 to find out about the Hero Campaign as well as other ways to support the American Red Cross in this area.
