Roving Rabbis to visit members of Jewish community in July
As part of a seven-decade-old program dubbed the Roving Rabbis, two rabbis are planning to visit the Cape Region for community outreach of behalf of Chabad of Southern Delaware.
Rabbis Shlomo Kesselman and Yossi Katz, who reside in New York, will conduct their visits during the middle two weeks of July.
They will reach out to members of the Jewish community in the region, most often in one-on-one home visitations. They will listen, talk and share as they seek to reinvigorate people's Jewish connections and introduce services of the newly established Chabad center in Lewes. They will offer opportunities to affix traditional Mezuzot on homes as well as understanding of other observances and practices.
For the young rabbis, this summer assignment will also provide an invaluable on-the-ground experience in Jewish outreach and the specific challenges of smaller Jewish communities, as well as a unique appreciation for the diverse composition and needs of the Jewish communities in southern Delaware.
Rabbi Sholom and Chanale Vogel have recently established Chabad of Southern Delaware in Lewes, providing classes, Shabbat meals, holiday programming and counseling. Chabad of Southern Delaware is a branch of Chabad of Delaware, which was established in Wilmington in 1987 and now serves the state with eight full-time staff in Wilmington, Newark and Lewes.
Conceived by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson of righteous memory, in the early 1940s, the visitation program has been credited with bolstering and rejuvenating countless Jewish communities and individuals around the world.
The program has seen rabbinical students visit more than 100 countries around the globe and every one of the United States, and this year, 350 Chabad rabbis have been dispatched to Jewish communities in Asia, Europe, the Americas and beyond.
