E-bike riders do not cause accidents

July 22, 2022

Regarding the recent letter by Michael Gartman concerning e-bikes on bike paths. He states e-bike riders are as courteous as anyone else, and these bikes don’t belong on the paths we have. I am 70 years old and have logged more than 800 miles since last summer on these bike paths. Using an e-bike enables me to ride. I rarely go over 8 mph, although I easily can. Many riders on regular bikes pass me going a whole lot faster. They are generally courteous, as are e-bike riders. I see pedal bike riders generally going much faster than e-bike riders. Mr. Gartman says he sees it as a safety issue for e-bike riders using the trails, but states no facts that e-bike riders cause any more accidents than regular bikes. Of the more than 800 miles I have ridden on the trails, I have never seen any accidents or injuries caused by e-bike riders and totally disagree that it’s a safety issue.
