A single-car crash July 27 on Mount Joy Road claimed the life of a passenger riding in the car.
The crash happened at 3:14 p.m. when a white 2019 Kia Optima driven by a Milford man, 27, was traveling eastbound on Mount Joy Road approaching a moderate left curve east of Cannon Road, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police. For unknown reasons, he said, the driver failed to negotiate the curve, exiting the south edge of Mount Joy Road and continued traveling eastbound until it struck a utility pole. After striking the pole, DeMalto said, the Kia overturned onto its roof and caught fire.
The driver was not properly restrained, DeMalto said, and he was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. The passenger of the vehicle sustained extensive thermal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was turned over to the Office of the Medical Examiner for identification confirmation.
No other vehicles were involved in this incident. The roadway was closed for about three hours while the collision was being investigated and cleared.
