Thomas Michael Heffernan, devoted husband, father

July 29, 2022

Thomas Michael Heffernan, 51, of Lewes, went peacefully home to God Wednesday, July 27, 2022, surrounded by his loving family after a brave battle with lung cancer.  He was born Nov. 8, 1970, on Long Island, N.Y., son of Joyce (Enright) Heffernan and the late Matthew Heffernan.

Tom’s family moved from New York to North Carolina while he was in high school. Following graduation, he was called home to New York and Manhattan College in 1993, where he met his dear Jennifer. They settled in Lewes in 2004. Tom worked for NYLife, Williams Insurance, then became an independent agent. He enjoyed fishing and rooting for the Mets, Jets and Islanders, always with a Miller Lite in his hand. Tom formed a coed softball team called the Beach Bums, and his commentaries were legendary. He was a splendid partner for trivial pursuit and always came out on top. His sense of humor will be sorely missed.  Tom was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, and friend. Loved by many, he will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

In addition to his mother, Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Jennifer; his children: Kathleen, Maggie, Tommy and Julie;  his mother-in-law Kathleen O’Brien-Joyce;  his sister, Gail (Bob);  his brothers:  Michael (Chris) and Matthew (Sarah);  his brothers-in-law, Brian (Michele) and Christopher (Becky);  his sister-in-law, Kathleen (Scott);  his special aunts: Julie and Joanie; his many nieces and nephews; and numerous dear cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 3, at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes.  A viewing will be held the night prior, Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes.

All are invited to join the Mass via livestream by visiting YouTube and searching St. Jude the Apostle, Lewes.
