Wiggins and Miller hit for first-half hat tricks
September 28, 2022

Cape hockey dispatched visiting Indian River 11-0 Sept. 27 to run its season record to 6-0, with all wins coming by shutout.

The win was taken with a whiff of salt air as the Vikings prepared for upcoming road games at Smyrna Thursday, Sept. 29; Delmar Thursday, Oct. 6; and Lake Forest Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Cape led 6-0 at the end of the first period and 7-0 at halftime. Grace Wiggins and Avary Miller each had a first-half hat trick.

Hannah Maney had two goals, while Mackinzie Brown, Addy Basile and Lexi Nowakowski each scored once.

Assists were credited to Maney, Devon DeGregory, Lulu Rishko and Abby Swift.

Cape had a 26-2 advantage in shots and a 14-4 margin in corners.

Morgan Newcomb and Bri Windish each had one save for Cape. Indian River’s Jazmin Mayfield was credited with 15 saves.

Blue chair quips - Indian River had a full JV squad and took Cape to the wire before losing 1-0 on a goal by Lucy Mongeluzo with four minutes left to play. Cape’s two Izzies shared time in goal, with Izzie Mekulski (four) and Izzy Fuscellaro (two) combining for six saves. Zoe Quillen had 10 saves for the Indians. Cape had a 13-8 advantage in shots and an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners. Both of Hannah Maney’s goals came on penalty strokes as the goal was overcrowded with Indians. Woodbridge beat Polytech 5-0, as the Raiders have served notice that “several somebodies will have to deal with us.” Sussex Academy beat Milford 3-0 on goals by Morgan Leeper, Shelby Manlove and Callie Short.
