Cape Henlopen hockey came loose at Jim Blades Field Oct. 11, dominating a good Lake Forest team 6-0, outshooting the Spartans 28-1, with a 15-1 advantage in corners.
Spartans junior goalie Madison Lawson was credited with 25 saves.
The Vikings improved to 8-1 on the season, with all wins coming by shutout.
First-half goals were scored by Grace Wiggins and Avary Miller, both unassisted. Lake managed a corner and a shot – saved by Morgan Newcomb – in the first half.
The Vikings went off in the second half, scoring third-quarter goals by Mackinzie Brown and Hannah Maney, then fourth-period scores from Lulu Risko and another tally by Brown off an assist from Devon DeGregory with three minutes left in the game.
Cape is scheduled to play at Milford Thursday, Oct. 13. Milford is 4-5-1, but only one loss is against a Henlopen Northern Division team. An upset win by the talented Bucs over Cape would give Milford the tiebreaker. A Cape win would position the Vikings as top dog in the North with a Nov. 5 date with Delmar for the Henlopen Conference Championship.
Blue chair quips - Woodbridge beat Dover 6-0 to improve to 7-2. Woodbridge plays at Cape Thursday, Oct. 20, which is Youth Night at Champions Stadium. Smyrna (9-1) will play undefeated Archmere at 10:30 a.m. Cape plays the Pandas of Padua at 1:30 p.m. Padua is a dangerous quality team with a 3-4 record. Division II has three unbeaten teams – Delmar (11-0), Archmere (10-0), and Tatnall (9-0). The top teams in Division I are Cape (8-1), Smyrna (9-1) and Charter School of Wilmington (6-1). Severna Park, the defending Maryland 4A state champion who lost to Delmar and Cape in the Bi-State challenge earlier this year, is currently 6-5 on the season.
