January 5, 2023

A slippery-when-wet Rehoboth Boardwalk and weather conditions that locals call froggy greeted 224 runners for the high noon Race into the New Year 5K Dec. 31. The race is the last of the year for Seashore Striders.

A dozen kids started things off racing from the Candy Kitchen and back to the finish.

Dylan Smiley, 24, was the overall race winner in 16:07. Olivia Montini, 18, was second overall and first female in 18:52.

Paul Montini won the male masters race in 19:23, while Cindy Conant, 61, won the female masters in 20:05.

A trio of Severna Park 12-year-old striders snapped, as Liam Lambert won the 10-13 division in 19:32, Sophia Lambert won the female race in 23:38 and Elena Wagner logged a time of 24:48.

Mason Morrone, 17, won the 14-19 male race in 19:19, followed closely by Terry Pettyjohn, 19, in 19:29.

Ally Miller, 16, of Milton ran a personal best time of 22:53 to win the 14-19 female age group. She was followed by Morgan Jarrell in 23:05.

Bryan Mack, 33, of Rehoboth Beach was third overall in 18:59. John Costello, 61, won his age group and was ninth overall in 20:12.

Cathy Haut, 66, won the female 65-69 age group in 35:18.

Mary Kessler, a 73-year-old running phenom, won the female 70-74 age group in 25:46.

Jack Noel and Jamie Wollard, both 84, won their age group, causing Magic Jack to humorously ask, “Who was second?” The answer is, “Actually, nobody.”
