The Independence community off Route 5 between Lewes and Long Neck is unique, with its own Veterans Club with 115 members. Each year, club members raise funds to support worthwhile organizations. The club is also open to first responders who live in the community.
But it's around Christmas that the club has its most ambitious fundraiser to support fellow veterans at Delaware Veterans Home in Milford and provide much-needed food to the Community Resource Center Food Rescue.
The club, through the generosity of the residents of Independence, raised $13,000, with $6,000 in gift cards to the veterans home and $7,000 in local grocery store gift cards to the Food Basket.
The presentations were made by Joe Biondi, who has served as chair for the past four years.
“The veterans club is very grateful to have such big-hearted friends and neighbors,” said Bill Ryon, club activities director.
