Worcester Prep seniors named National Merit finalists

March 8, 2023

Two Worcester Preparatory School seniors are one step closer to earning the title of National Merit Scholar.

In September, Parker Tingle of Fenwick Island and Christopher Todorov of Bishopville, Md., were named 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists, and they have now been named finalists. The two seniors qualified for the accolade by taking the 2021 PSAT. They are among 16,000 students selected as semifinalists, representing fewer than 1 percent of all U.S. high school seniors.

As finalists, Parker and Christopher have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered in spring. Approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a nonprofit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 340 business organizations and higher education institutions that share the corporation’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
