Little Vikings invaded the Bermuda grass fields at Cape Henlopen High School July 31 to kick off a week of learning from current high school players and the head coach of the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams.
In the shadow of Legends Stadium, soccer players of various skill levels learned first-foot what it will take to compete at a varsity level on the pitch. Coach Patrick Kilby said 100% of the proceeds from the camp go directly to the Cape boys’ soccer program.
“Every year, I am fortunate enough to take the varsity team on an overnight trip. Last year, we went to Boston and visited Northeastern University while playing a few matches against some Boston-area high schools,” Kilby said.
This year, the team will head to North Carolina to visit East Carolina and UNC Wilmington while playing two regular-season games in the Tar Heel State.
Not only does the boys’ team benefit monetarily, but also, the camps are a way to connect with younger players and set them on the right track.
“Of the 12 Cape boys’ and girls’ players volunteering, 10 of them attended this very camp when they were younger players,” Kilby said.
The camp features specialized coaching each day, focusing on one area of the game to help build the players’ acumen and skill. For the last portion of camp each day, the players scrimmaged, getting a chance to showcase skills and demonstrate the lessons of the day.
“The simple fact that this camp has now come full circle is something I am very proud of. Our culture within the Cape soccer program is one that builds community and pride,” Kilby said. “Thank you Kings Ice Cream and Surf Bagel for your support, as well!”
